The DA calls on the Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General De Lange, to investigate an incident of assault during which a South African Police Service (SAPS) Officer allegedly violently assaulted his girlfriend. The Officer in question is said to be based at the Krugersdorp SAPS station.
I have written to the Commissioner to request an urgent investigation into the incident.
The incident came to light following a Twitter post that chronicled the alleged attack. The assault reportedly took place on Tuesday 20 March 2018, following which the officer allegedly locked his victim in their house in Protea Glen, Johannesburg.
This is the latest in a string of alleged assaults, which reportedly include the officer threatening to kill his partner.
Each time that the alleged victim attempts to end the abusive relationship, she is answered with threats of violence. In a prior incident, she was reportedly taken to a deserted field, where her life was again threatened.
South African women routinely face abuse and torment at the hands of their partners. Many, like Karabo Mokoena, have lost their lives in this way. Their defense against the scourge of women abuse and femicide should be the SAPS. However, in this instance, the alleged victim was not able to go to the police for help, as her partner threatened to kill her if she did.
The SAPS are there to protect the vulnerable and are meant to uphold the law first and foremost. We call on the Gauteng SAPS Commissioner to act decisively in this matter. No person is above the law.
The DA stands by women who face abuse. We will continue to do all that we can to fight the injustice of women abuse.
