Five suspects in a farm attack in the Western Cape are currently on the run on Tuesday evening. The police are searching for the men after a 62-year-old woman was murdered on Monday.

TimesLIVE reports that Heila Killian was shot dead while attending a braai on a farm just outside the coastal town of Still Bay. The police later confirmed the incident.

Farm murders: On the rise?

SAPS Southern Cape police spokesman Captain Malcolm Pojie explained that Killian was a guest at a small braai on a farm that doubles as a nursery and coffee shop.

“Preliminary investigation and witness reports reveals that the owner of Gezania Nursery and three friends were enjoying themselves at a braai in the garden situated in the back of the house when they were accosted by five armed suspects whose faces were covered with balaclavas‚ and all of them wore orange overall-type trousers.”

Witnesses of the attack say that the men began shooting without any sense of warning.

Two male victims were overpowered and handcuffed by the attackers. Another female victim managed to escape into the bushes. She made her way to a neighbouring farm while alerting the authorities and calling for help.

“The suspects meanwhile ransacked the house‚ broke open the safe and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash‚ a collection of firearms including a shotgun‚ two rifles and a handgun‚ as well as a collection of hunting knives‚” Pojie told TimesLIVE.

The attackers fled the scene in the farm owner’s white Toyota Hilux.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the bakkie was later spotted refuelling at a petrol station in Heidelberg‚ indicating that the suspects were en route to Cape Town after commission of the crime.”

The police have asked people with any information to come forward and contact the investigating officer. Detective Sergeant Ludwig Schnetler‚ who can be reached at 079-894-1593 or 028-754-6100‚ or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
