Match referee, Victor Gomes was at the centre of the drama, which involved a number of the Bidvest Wits players, the Wits CEO and Head Coach Gavin Hunt trying to calm the situation.
Gomes cautioned Wits’ centre-back, Robyn Johannes with two yellow card bookings, which resulted in a red card and the player being sent off the field during stoppage time.
Gomes’ first yellow card booking to Johannes came after a challenge on Bernard Parker, with the player subsequently receiving another caution for what appeared to be dissent.
However, Johannes was not the only player that was cautioned by Gomes on the night.
Thabang Monare, Cole Alexander, Buhle Mkhwanazi and Sifiso Hlanti were all cautioned, while no Chiefs players picked up any bookings.
This morning, Wits took to Twitter stating that there was an incident involving Gomes in the tunnel prior to the game.
“If only you were in the tunnel before the match to hear and see the Victor Gomes show! Easy to say that from your couch!”
Following the tweet, the Media investigated the matter.
Speaking to sources at Wits, Gomes made remarks to the Wits players in the tunnel prior to kick-off, which had the players perplexed.
The source explained that Gomes directed comments to the Wits players about time wasting, suggesting that they could be potentially ‘sent off’, and referenced that they could tweet and do interviews about it afterwards.
The source added that the players made nothing of it and were completely puzzled but following Johannes’ sending off, they have since questioned the remarks by Gomes in the tunnel before of the game.
Contacted for comment, the club’s media officer, Julian Bailey was unavailable at the time of publication. The Siya crew also contacted the National Referees Committee, but the body was unavailable for comment.
