Orlando Pirates may have just won the race to sign SuperSport United winger Thuso Phala.

The player has been linked with a move away from Matsatsantsa in recent weeks and is said to have attracted interest from the likes of Pirates, Bidvest Wits and Highlands Park.

In fact, Highlands mentor Owen da Gama said hearing that Phala could be looking for a move is enticing.

“I have not spoken to Thuso or anybody in that regard. I heard that Thuso is available and that could be enticing. Thuso came through my hands as a junior [at Silver Stars, then Platinum Stars]. He went to Chiefs and then when I went back to Platinum Stars I signed him from Sundowns,” the former Bafana Bafana assistant coach said over the weekend.

The media, however, has been informed that Phala is favoured to join the Buccaneers during the current transfer window, which would make him part of an elite group of players to have donned the jerseys of Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.

“We have many offers for Thuso Phala. He’s still with us for now as he still have six months left on his contract,” SuperSport official David Skhosana said.

“As a club we haven’t got any signed document. We are hearing reports from you guys about Orlando Pirates. We will make an announcement once there is a deal.”

He added: “We can’t confirm or deny anything. Thuso is still with us as far as we know.”

Phala has made just six Absa Premiership appearances, and five in knockout competitions, this season.

Skhosana, meanwhile, said they are still happy with coach Kaitano Tembo at the helm. Matsatsantsa have registered just two league wins in their last 10 matches.

“As much as we are struggling a bit, we are not looking for a new coach. We are still comfortable and happy with him.”
