Kaizer Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung says recommendations will be made to new coach Ernst Middendorp regarding beefing up the team in the January transfer window.

Lorenzo Gordinho is set to return from a loan spell at Bloemfontein Celtic and will bolster a defence that needs to be stronger, but there could be a few other players coming in to help the side fight for trophies in the second half of the season.

Chiefs brought in the likes of Lebogang Manyama, Mario Booysen, Godfrey Walusimbi and marquee signing Khama Billiat before the start of the season, hoping that they would inspire the side to success early on in the campaign. That, however, has not been the case and this could see them making a few additions when the window opens in a couple of weeks.

“We will have a discussion with the coach and we will sit down and review. Players react differently. You can’t say you are offloading, maybe with the new coach we might not have to beef up because players react differently [when a new coach comes in]. So we will have to take it a step at a time, and we are looking at bringing in 3 international players” Motaung said.

“Obviously the players have to come on board, but we will see at the end of the year what the challenges will be and see what the coach thinks of where we need to beef up. We know and we will recommend, and we will show where the challenges are. Like you say, ‘Rama’ [Ramahlwe Mphahlele] is injured but we have other players. Gordinho is coming back.

“So there are areas where the coach might say we need one or two. We will give him time to work with the team. January is around the corner and there will be games in between, so we will assess.”

Chiefs, who play their last game of the year against ASSM Elgeco Plus in the CAF Confederation Cup this weekend, will begin 2019 with a league match at home against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns on January 5.
