South Afric’s  Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane said that leaders in Zille’s position “should avoid statements that have the effect of dividing society on the basis of their racial experiences.” She added:

There appears to be exchanges from both sides of the political divide.

“There need not be actual scenes of racial tension, violence and division to support a finding on the potential effects of a divisive and insensitive statement about the painful history of the majority of South Africans.”

Zille then began sharing video clips of an interview with Julius Malema, and captioned it: “The only person who glorifies apartheid is Julius Malema.” In the video clip, Malema questioned the ANC for closing “a clinic built by apartheid.”

Zille defended her tweets about colonialism by saying she specifically spoke about the legacy of colonialism. She explained:
