A farmer who “allowed” his dog to attack a 68-year-old woman in Mpumalanga early this year is facing another charge after it was revealed the dog had previously also attacked a boy.

The elderly woman was badly injured when the dog attacked her in Bethal in January.

When the accused appeared in court last week, it emerged he had been implicated in a previous case after a boy, said to be a preteen, was attacked by a dog belonging to the same farmer, police spokesperson Constable Mahlatse Mogadime said.

“Details around that incident are still unclear.”

The farmer was arrested for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The 44-year-old is accused of releasing his dog to attack the woman, who was picking wild spinach in the veld.

Mogadime said the woman was helped by one of the farm employees.

Both the woman and the boy had recovered from their injuries, Mogadime said, adding the farmer had indicated he would plead guilty.

The case was postponed to Wednesday.
